As part of National Park Week 2014, Fort Stanwix NM is hosting its first ever Rome Appreciation Day, Saturday, April 26th from 9 am to 5 pm. Whether or not this is your first time visiting the park or your fiftieth, there will be plenty of things to see and do, with special opportunities for those with the 13440, 13441, and 13442 ZIP codes.

"We want to thank the residents of Rome for all of their support through the years." said Debbie Conway, Superintendent. "The National Park Service, the City, and its residents have worked hand-in-hand to preserve the amazing history that has taken place here, and to promote the area. We thought it was time to offer Roman’s their own special day at the fort."

Throughout the day, the park will come alive with living history programs and demonstrations. Muskets will fire, cannons will roar, and sentries will be waiting to greet you as you cross over the bridge into the fort. In addition to the living history activities throughout the day, visitors will also have the opportunity to learn more about the park’s extensive artifact collection from the cultural resources division, and discover how the facility management team works to keep the park beautiful, safe, and historically accurate with special behind the scenes tours of the Willett Center and Maintenance shop. Please note that for the safety of the visitors and park resources, certain age and group size restrictions apply for the behind the scenes tours.

At 2 pm, bring your questions and ideas to share with Superintendent Debbie Conway. She will be available for a 1-hour "Superintendent’s Chat", and share what challenges and opportunities the park is facing at this time. Have your questions answered about past, present, and future initiatives, and learn about some of the planning underway to celebrate the National Park Service’s centennial in 2016.

Look for additional information about this exciting event in the coming weeks!
