Rome, NY — On Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24, 2009, Fort Stanwix National Monument will open its gates once again to the darker side of history. "Mystery, Myth, and Mayhem," explores the brutality of serving at the frontier outpost, and is recommended for visitors of all ages. The program will be presented from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. both nights, and has been modified to a self-guided format.

The new format permits visitors to participate at their own pace and interest levels, not limiting their contact with the staff and volunteers to specific tour times. Also, there are many more areas of the fort that will be available to visit; each sharing a unique story of life in the wilderness. Along with the stories shared in previous years, visitors can discover how 18th century medical techniques were affected by military life, why civilians at the fort became targets for the enemy, and what triggered officers to give orders to stay within sight of the fort, plus much more.

Visitors are invited to pick up a map of the fort showing the various interpretive spaces within the fort at either the Willett Center located at the intersection of James and Dominick Streets, or in the Guard House within the fort. Please join us and discover once again why some parts of history are best left in the past!

Fort Stanwix National Monument is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission to the park is free. Activities are ongoing unless noted. For more information about upcoming events please call the park at (315)338-7730.
