When Christopher Columbus set off to find the “New World”, he stumbled upon the beauty of the Virgin Islands. Now it’s your turn to discover U.S Virgin Islands with a visit to Fort Stanwix National Monument!

Fort Stanwix National Monument will be hosting its fifth “School’s Out” program on Monday, October 12, in honor of Columbus Day. Children participating in the program will learn about a bit of the history of the Virgin Islands, including the native plants and animals that Columbus might have seen during his exploration of the islands. At the end of the program, participants will be rewarded with the Junior Ranger badge and certificate from the Virgin Islands National Park on St. John’s Island, VI.

The theme for the 2009 "School’s Out at the Fort" series at Fort Stanwix National Monument is "exploring the country from the comfort of Rome." The “Schools Out at the Fort” programs are all free of charge. They run from 1 to 2 pm in the Marinus Willett Center at the intersection of Dominick and James Streets in Rome. Children ages 5-12 are encouraged to participate with their families.

Are you traveling for the Columbus Day Weekend? Many of the National Parks throughout the country have Junior Ranger programs for children of all ages. There is also a website children can visit to explore the National Parks when the weather keeps them inside – www.nps.gov/webrangers. Experience your America!

Fort Stanwix National Monument is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Admission to the park is free. Activities are ongoing unless noted. For more information about upcoming events please call the park at (315)338-7730. Please visit the park’s web page at www.nps.gov/fost for additional information about the park and up-to-date news about park events.
