Parking Tips:

Fort Smith National Historic Site's parking lot is located at 4th Street and Garland Avenue.  From Rogers Avenue in downtown Fort Smith, go south on 4th Street two blocks to Garland Avenue and turn right.  Garland Avenue takes you directly into the parking lot.  The Fort Smith National Historic Site's parking lot is equipped for large motor homes and buses.

There is also limited parking available along Third Street at Parker Avenue.  From Rogers Avenue, turn south on 4th Street and go one block to Parker Avenue, turn right.  Parker Avenue dead-ends at Third Street where there are some parking spaces.

Did You Know?
The conditions at the federal jail at Fort Smith were so horrible that it received the nickname "Hell on the Border." Up to 50 men were crowded into one large cell with limited ventilation and poor sanitary conditions.
