Execution Anniversary Programs at the Gallows

On the anniversary dates of executions carried out by the federal court (1873-1896) park rangers will present programs at the reconstructed gallows at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. This will include an overview of the federal court during the late 19th century, federal law involving capital crimes, and conditions in Indian Territory. Information will be presented about the condemned individuals executed on that date as well as their victims.

 

·         Thursday, September 3,  11:00 a.m. & 2:00 p.m. – Commemoration of the executions of Edmond Campbell, Daniel Evans, Samuel Fooy, Smoker Mankiller,  James Moore, William Whittington (1875)

·         Wednesday, September 8, 11:00 a.m. & 2:00 p.m.- Commemoration of the executions of Samuel Peters, Osey Sanders, John Valley, Sinker Wilson (1876)

·         Thursday, September 9, 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.- Commemoration of the executions of William Brown, Abler Manley, Amos Manley, Patrick McGowen, George W. Padgett (1881)

·         Saturday, September 12 - Civil War Event

·         Sunday, September 20, 11:00 a.m. & 2:00 p.m.- Commemoration of the John Pointer (1894)

Did You Know?
Fort Smith was established on Christmas Day, 1817. Approximately 70 Rifle Regiment soldiers arrived by keelboat after a long journey on the Arkansas River.
