First Bloom Program
The Fort Smith National Historic Site proudly announces the First Bloom project in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The First Bloom project is a grant made possible by the National Park Foundation. First Bloom connects underserved urban youth to their National Parks through native plantings and gardens. The Fort Smith National Historic Site has partnered with the local youth organization Girls Incorporated of Fort Smith. Girls Incorporated participated in a 2009 summer program involving the Heritage Garden at the site. The participants planted heirloom seeds and plants while learning about a child’s role in gardening during the 1860s.

The Return of the Union to Fort Smith
On Saturday, September 12, free programs will highlight the different aspects of garrison life in Fort Smith under during the Union occupation of 1863. Throughout the day, park staff and volunteers will present interpretive programs on the duties of the cavalry, artillery, infantry, commissary staff, and laundresses.

Execution Anniversary Programs at the Gallows
On the anniversary dates of executions carried out by the federal court (1873-1896) park rangers will present programs at the reconstructed gallows at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. This will include an overview of the federal court during the late 19th century, federal law involving capital crimes, and conditions in Indian Territory. Information will be presented about the condemned individuals executed on that date as well as their victims.

Dutch Oven Cooking Demonstration
On Monday, July 20, the Fort Smith National Historic Site staff will offer a free Dutch oven cooking demonstration that is open to the public. This living history demonstration will be presented at the visitor center at 10:00 a.m. The program will include information on the history of Dutch oven cooking and a demonstration. The public is invited to attend.
