1858 Remington Revolver

Caliber: .44

Barrel length: 8"

This pistol was a six shot single action revolver. Used primarily by Union soldiers in the Civil War, it was favored by many solders over the 1860 Colt because it had a top strap it was of a much more durable quality. These pistols were issued to the Second and Sixth Kansas Cavalry while they were at Fort Smith during the Civil War. The soldiers who came to Fort Smith in 1817 were still using some 18th century technology and drill. The cannon was discharged using a lindstock and slowmatch to ignite the primer, which originally was loose powder or a turkey quill filled with powder.
