Fort Scott National Historic Site relies on volunteers for assistance throughout the year. VIPs (Volunteers-In-Parks) do everything from black powder demonstrations in living history events, to providing visitor services at the front desk. Others assist in the library and museum collection, researching, doing general office tasks, and helping with site and equipment maintenance. All positions are important. Besides looking great on a resume, volunteering at Fort Scott National Historic Site is enjoyable and leaves a lasting sense of accomplishment to all involved. No experience is necessary - only a desire to help preserve and protect America's natural and cultural heritage for the enjoyment of this and future generations. Volunteers are needed year-round and training is provided; along with uniforms for volunteers who work with the public. Because of the stated purpose of the sponsors of Section 512 to provide uniformity under applicable state law from bureau-to-bureau, the potential liability issues that could result, and the absence of any criminal penalties applicable to this regulation, this Departmental policy continues to apply to all NPS/FWS employees and volunteers during their official duties. Volunteers who are not on official duty may possess firearms on Departmental lands under the same conditions applicable to members of the general public, according to P.L. 111-24, Section 512.
