Interpretive Tools

The staff of Fort Scott is pleased to announce the addition of many new interpretive tools that were put into place in 2009. These tools include the following: A new film-Dreams and Dilemmas: Fort Scott and the Growth of a Nation-began playing in June of 2009. This 23 minute movie highlights Fort Scott's role in important events in the mid nineteenth century that transformed the United States from a young divided republic into a united powerful transcontinental nation. The film is closed captioned and audio devices are available at the site's visitor center for assistive listening and audio description. A new park brochure was received in the park in August of 2009. Our new brochure includes a new park map, a narrative of the site's history, and text that describes the historic uses of the buildings on site. The site also developed a cell phone tourĀ in 2009. The cell phone tour consists of 12 stops, with recordings at each stop telling how the associated building contributed to Fort Scott being the "Crack Post of the Frontier" Another new interpretive tool that will be implemented at the beginning of 2010 is a new junior ranger program. New junior ranger booklets have been printed, but some work remains to be done to fully implement this program. Details will be posted when the program is ready to launch. |

Colonel George Croghan, the inspector general, visited the fort in 1844. He praised living conditions, but disliked the layout. He remarked that the hospital "interrupted in the most offensive way, the only refreshing summer breezes" One author doubted that any building could stop a Kansas wind.
