  • Exhibits Closed

    Beginning Monday August 25, the infantry barracks museum will be closed for remodeling and to prepare for a new theater and exhibits. Work is expected to be completed by spring of 2015. The site's movie will be played in the visitor center upon request.

Goods & Services

A cooperating association sales outlet run by Western National Parks and Monuments Association is operated at the site and offers books, historic souvenirs, an audio visual selection and logo merchandise (tshirts, totebags, hats, pins, patches, magnets, decals, and hiking stick medallions)

Several antique and gift shops are located nearby in downtown Fort Scott and other retail establishments abound elsewhere in town

Did You Know?

General Winfield Scott at the time of the Mexican American War

The fort was named for General Winfield Scott, who was the commander of all American armies in the 1840s. General Scott was none too happy about it and said that it was done without his knowledge and against his wishes.
