Plunge indepth into a historical era of the site's history. Act out an era of westward expanion, participate in a raid, experience courtroom drama, become a soldier in the Union Army, or join a Civil War medical team.


  • This program is designed for grades 7-8.
  • It is offered throughout the year except for during special events and spring education programs for elementary students. For reservations call 620-223-0310.
  • For Conflict on the Border programs, groups should make reservations at least three weeks in advance.
  • Participants in "Conflict on the Border " have their choice of six programs which respectively address three major themes of the site's history: Manifest Destiny, "Bleeding Kansas," and the Civil War. The programs focus on the role of Fort Scott in each of these time periods. (Individual links to each program will be added soon.)
  • Programs last from 45 minutes to an hour. Groups of larger than 50 may be divided. The program is wheelchair accessible.
  • In addition, to these presentations, groups may also participate in our orientation program, a scavenger hunt, or a tour of the fort.
  • A ranger will work with you in planning an itinerary that best suits your needs.

Did You Know?
Fort Scott uses three styles of architecture: French Colonial, Greek Revival, and vernacular. The most dominant is French Colonial; characterized by wide porches, stairways and a broken roofline. Most living quarters are on the second floor to avoid bad air believed to exist at lower levels.
