Children's Activities - Overview
NCO Quarters

No specific structure is associated with this station, but there is a noncommissioned officers family quarters at the rear of the dragoon barracks that has some toys and children’s' items on display. This is the room where a sergeant or corporal and his wife would have lived with their children. The quarters were not as elaborate as an officer's quarters but at least the family had some privacy. Laundresses married to privates may have stayed in tents with their families.

Children of officers would have occupied one of the upstairs bedrooms in an officer's quarters.

Col. George Croghan

Did You Know?
Colonel George Croghan, the inspector general, visited the fort in 1844. He praised living conditions, but disliked the layout. He remarked that the hospital "interrupted in the most offensive way, the only refreshing summer breezes" One author doubted that any building could stop a Kansas wind.
