Area youth playing Civil War Baseball in October 2007

As autumn approaches, Major League Baseball teams will be jostling for position to determine who will be competing to play in the Fall Classic (the World Series) On Saturday, September 4, Fort Scott will feature its own Fall Classic by hosting a Civil War Baseball Game. Once again, the site will be recruiting area youth aged 12-17 to form two teams- the Jayhawkers and the Bushwhackers. The game will be played on the parade ground of Fort Scott NHS and will be conducted according to 1860s rules. Period equipment will be used as will period costuming; the Jayhawkers will be adorned in Union kepis, while Bushwhackers will be sporting Confederate caps.

Ideally, the Jayhawker team will consist of players from Kansas while people from Missouri will fill the ranks of the Bushwhackers. If interested and available to play on one of the teams, contact the site at 620-223-0310 as soon as possible. Participants must be registered in advance in order to play.  Space is limited to 12 per team. Game time is 11:00 a.m., but participants should plan to arrive by 9:30 a.m. to dress out and to practice. Refreshments will be provided at the game.

While there is an entrance fee of $3.00 for each adult aged 16 and above, participants on the teams will not be charged the fee. Children 15 and below are admitted free of charge. The baseball game will be just one of several activities that will take place at Fort Scott NHS over the Labor Day weekend.

Col. George Croghan

Colonel George Croghan, the inspector general, visited the fort in 1844. He praised living conditions, but disliked the layout. He remarked that the hospital "interrupted in the most offensive way, the only refreshing summer breezes" One author doubted that any building could stop a Kansas wind.
