Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, with its 400 years of history, is home to many stories. Though the most recognized is retold each summer through the outdoor symphonic drama, The Lost Colony, the Civil War era also features prominently with the Battle of Roanoke Island and the Freedmen’s Colony.

Did You Know?
An early major Union victory during the Civil War happened on Roanoke Island on February 8, 1862. 15,000 Union soldiers overran the Confederate garrison of only 3,000 men and opened up Eastern North Carolina to Union invasion.
