Junior Ranger Worksheet - Part 2
Design Your Own Coat of Arms
Coats of Arms were originally designed as a method of personal recognition. During the days of knights, it was impossible to tell friend from foe because the warrior's face was covered with armor. To solve this problem, each knight began wearing a "coat" over his armor so that his friends might recognize him. These coats were often bold and beautiful and displayed elements from the individual's life of which he was particularly proud.
When you design your Coat of Arms, embellish it with things you enjoy (if you like to read — include a book; if you like baseball — include a ball and bat; you get the idea.) Make it bold and beautiful so that all may know you.
Did You Know?
The land west of the Atlantic coastline from Newfoundland to Florida was given the name Virginia by the English. The land was named for the newly discovered unspoiled land and Elizabeth I, the “Virgin Queen”.
