Fort Pulaski National Monument Celebrates Women's History Month

SAVANNAH, GA – Fort Pulaski National Monument will commemorate Women’s History Month with a weekend of programs focusing on women in the Civil War era on Saturday, March 15 and Sunday, March 16, 2014.

Union and Confederate armies forbade the enlistment of women. Females who wanted to participate in the war on the front lines disguised themselves as men. To honor those women who served in the American Civil War, the park’s historic weapons demonstrations will feature the park’s female staff and volunteers on Saturday, March 15. The musket firing demonstration at 12 noon and the cannon firing demonstrations at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM will be solely performed by women.

On Sunday, March 16, Fort Pulaski National Monument will present two historical fashion shows featuring garments of the Civil War era. At 1:00 PM, visitors will enjoy a presentation of Victorian Secrets: Civil War Ladies Undergarments. This special presentation will review the dressing process with layer upon layer of undergarments for the 19th century woman – complete with live model – and dress her from the “inside out”. Immediately following, there will be a Civil War Ladies Fashion Show. Ladies of the Civil War period wore a variety of clothing depending upon social status, customs, and events. The staff and volunteers of Fort Pulaski will “walk the runway” and offer a narrated look at clothing of the Civil War period – from day dresses to ball gowns and everything in between.

On Saturday & Sunday, Mark Watts – a Civil War re-enactor with the 20th South Carolina Infantry of Columbia, SC – will provide clothes-making demonstrations on a period sewing machine, using patterns and fabrics of the 19th century. Mr. Watts has been a tailor for over 25 years and specializes in authentic, historic reproduction clothing.

Fort Pulaski is located on US Highway 80 E, 12 miles east of Savannah. The entrance fee is $5.00 per adult. Children under the age of 16 are free.
