Contact: Laura Rich Acosta, (912) 786-5787 National Public Lands Day 2012 More than 170,000 volunteers will take part in the 19th annual National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 29, 2012. As the nation's largest one-day volunteer event in support of public lands, more than 2,000 sites in all 50 states and the District of Columbia will host a wide array of activities. The volunteer efforts will equal $15 million in improvements. The 2012 theme for National Public Lands Day at Fort Pulaski National Monument is "Savannah River: Renew, Refresh, Revitalize". This year, Fort Pulaski is partnering with "Trash Free Seas", a program of the Ocean Conservancy (www.OceanConservancy.org) and Rivers Alive (www.RiversAlive.org). We will hold a debris removal event throughout our site, including our marshes and the McQueen Island Rails to Trails. The event will engage people in removing trash and debris from our waterways and land-based debris that will migrate to the waterways. It is preferred that those interested in participating in National Public Lands Day contact the park Facility Manager at (912) 786-5787 by Friday, September 21 to pre-register. Volunteer registration begins on Saturday, September 29 at 8:00 AM in the Fort Pulaski Picnic Area. Complimentary breakfast will be served during registration. Work projects will last from 9:00 AM until 12:00 noon, followed by complimentary lunch. Volunteers should be prepared to work outdoors. Sturdy closed-toed, closed-heeled shoes, comfortable clothing, sun block, sunglasses, and wide-brimmed hats are recommended. Tools and gloves will be provided. Special, limited edition t-shirts designed for Fort Pulaski's National Public Lands Day 2012 event will be provided to all volunteers. Following the National Public Lands Day activities, volunteers are encouraged to enjoy the park's Saturday programming, which include a musket firing at 1:00 PM, a Ranger program at 2:00 PM, a cannon firing at 3:00 PM, and a guided fort tour at 3:30 PM. Fort Pulaski National Monument is on U.S. Hwy 80, 15 miles east of Savannah. Call the park at (912) 786-5787 for details, or visit the park's official website at www.nps.gov/fopu -NPS- |
