SAVANNAH – The National Park Service is pleased to announce the availability of the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the repair or replacement of the Fort Pulaski Bridge at the Fort Pulaski National Monument. An Environmental Assessment (EA) was prepared by the National Park Service (NPS) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for the repair and/or replacement of the Fort Pulaski Bridge in January 2013. In the January 2013 EA, several rehabilitation and replacement alternatives were analyzed, and Alternative D, rehabilitation of the existing bridge, was identified as the Preferred Alternative. Further review of the cost estimates of the proposed alternatives and investigation of the use of alternative bridge types changed the analysis regarding whether replacement of the existing bridge on a new alignment was cost-prohibitive. This EA was prepared to provide the updated analysis regarding the reasonable and feasible alternatives and their impacts and reevaluate alternatives that were previously determined to be unreasonable due to cost. Copies of the EA are available at the Fort Pulaski National Monument Visitor Center located off of Highway 80, approximately 15 miles south of Savannah. Directions to the park are available online (www.nps.gov/fopu) or by phone (912-786-5787). The EA will also be available on the National Park Service’s Planning, Environment, and Public Comment website https://parkplanning.nps.gov. Under “Choose a Park” click on “Fort Pulaski NM” and follow the link to Rehabilitation / Replacement of Fort Pulaski Bridge. The comment period is open from February 26, 2015 through April 2, 2015. – NPS –
