Welcome to Fort Point National Historic Site!

From its vantage point overlooking the spectacular Golden Gate, Fort Point protected San Francisco harbor from Confederate & foreign attack during & after the U.S. Civil War. Its beautifully arched casemates display the art of the master brick mason from the Civil War period.

Fort Point is now open Thursday to Monday from 10AM to 5PM (through September 2008).

 
Volunteers assist park staff in numerous activities, from visitor information to habitat restoration.

Volunteers-In-Parks

Volunteers-In-Parks show their support by donating valuable time that allows park staff to run a number of programs that would be impractical or impossible without volunteer assistance. The American Civil War Association will garrison Fort Point on Saturday, August 16. Civil War re-enactors in colorful uniforms will bring the fort to life with marching, drilling and a brass band. Activities include cannon and rifle demonstrations and talks on soldier life.

It is a race against time to observe each of the 33 endangered and threatened species found within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), while taking 33 discrete conservation recovery actions that will prevent these species from going extinct. It is a competitive event: the person who sees and helps the most species between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008, will win the Big Year.

Fort Point is cold and windy most of the time. You can probably count on the temperature being at least 10 degrees cooler that the current listing below. Spring and Fall generally offer the best weather. Dress warmly for your visit, with layers of clothing.
