Winners of 2009 Washington's Birthday Art Contest Announced

FARMINGTON, Pa: The National Park Service will honor the winners of the Fort Necessity Washington's Birthday Art Contest with award ceremonies Saturday, February 21.  Students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades of local elementary schools were challenged to artistically depict an event in George Washington's life.  Entries were received from fifteen area public and private schools, and from area home school children.  Judges chose the winners from 474 student entries based on artistic merit and historical accuracy.
  
   The ceremony begins at 1:00 p.m.  Students will receive a $50 U.S. Savings Bond for first prize, a $25.00 gift certificate to the Fort Necessity Bookstore for second prize, or a George Washington Medallion for third prize.  Honorable mention entries earned a Fort Necessity patch and certificate.  Awards will be presented to:
  
   Fourth Grade - Washington in Fayette Category:  First Prize: Corrina Elias, Saint John the Evangelist, Uniontown; Second Prize: Alyson Grant, Cardale Elementary, New Salem; Third Prize: Sarah Stiffy, Frazier Central Elementary, Perryopolis; Honorable Mention Anthony Lovat, Saint Mary Nativity School, Uniontown; Casey Eperjesi, Frazier Central Elementary; Mazie Lee Bradley, Frazier Central Elementary.
  
   Fourth Grade - Life of Washington Category:  First Prize: Remington Hostetler, George J. Plava Elementary, McClellandtown; Second Prize: Juliana Mosser, Frazier Central Elementary; Third Prize:  Jeanaycia Jordan, Cardale Elementary; Honorable Mention: Chance Marsh, Frazier Central Elementary.
  
   Fourth Grade Special Merit Awards:  Fort Necessity: Lacey Mullins, G.C. Marshall Elementary, Uniontown; Portrait of Washington:  Michael Barth, New Meadow Run School, Farmington.
  
   Fifth Grade - Washington in Fayette Category:  First Prize: Jordan Mancuso, Perry Elementary, Perryopolis; Second Prize: Ashley Capo, Conn-Area Catholic, Connellsville; Third Prize: Blair Elliot, Frazier Central Elementary; Honorable Mention: Shelby Settles, Saint John the Evangelist, Uniontown; Bret Poling, Perry Elementary.

   Fifth Grade - Life of Washington Category:  First Prize: Danielle Hatalowich, Perry Elementary; Second Prize: Gina Coldren, Frazier Central Elementary; Third Prize:  Stephanie Wells, Saint John the Baptist, Scottdale; Honorable Mention: Conn-Area Catholic School; Alyssa Hutchinson, Conn-Area Catholic School.
  
   Fifth Grade Special Merit Award:  Portrait of Washington: Timmy Broadwater, Frazier Central Elementary.
  
   Sixth Grade - Washington in Fayette Category:  First Prize:  Kennedy Scarry, Conn-Area Catholic School; Second Prize: Allison Kuklar, Saint John the Evangelist; Third Prize:  Lake Murray, A.J. McMullen Middle School, Markleysburg; Honorable Mention: Haley Thomas, Conn-Area Catholic School.
  
   Sixth Grade –Life of Washington Category:  First Prize:  Callahan Abel, A.J. McMullen Middle School; Second Prize: Eric Button, New Meadow Run School; Third Prize: Stephanie Pish, Saint John the Evangelist; Honorable Mention: Jordan Guthrie, A.J. McMullen Middle School.
  
   All entries will be on display at the Fort Necessity/National Road Interpretive and Education Center February 21 through March 2. 
  
   Following the award ceremony, Paul Mackowick, a French and Indian War re-enactor, will present a costumed program about soldier’s life in Washington’s Fort Necessity campaign.
  
   Fort Necessity National Battlefield is located 11 miles east of Uniontown on U.S. Route 40, The Historic National Road.
