Free Entrance to National Parks this Weekend FARMINGTON, Pa., - Saturday, September 27, 2008 is National Public Lands day. To celebrate the legacy and stewardship of our shared lands, Americans can enjoy free admission to National Parks and other public lands on that day. National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. Stop by and visit a National Park, Forest or Wildlife Refuge near you! Residents of southwestern Pennsylvania can visit any of their five National Park sites. Entrance fees will be waived at Fort Necessity National Battlefield in Farmington, Johnstown Flood National Memorial in St. Michael, and Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site in Cresson. Admission is free every day at Friendship Hill National Historic Site in Point Marion and Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville. The Friendship Hill Association, a volunteer group dedicated to stewardship of Friendship Hill National Historic Site, has chosen this weekend to host the annual FestiFall at Friendship Hill. In addition, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne has invited all citizens to enter National Parks free of charge on September 28, 2008 to honor newly naturalized citizens. “Our National Parks celebrate the story of America: our history, our heroes and the ideals upon which we build our future,” Kempthorne said. “With this invitation I want to give our newest citizens, those who have chosen to adopt America as their home, a chance to come and experience those pieces of America for themselves.” The entrance fee waiver has been created in conjunction with National Public Lands Day, on which all national public lands are free to the public. This new fee waiver, just for entrance to National Parks, creates a weekend where citizens can come and enjoy the beauty, culture and history of their country free of charge. Friendship Hill National Historic Site is located on Rt. 166 between Point Marion, PA and New Geneva, PA. Fort Necessity National Battlefield is located 11 miles east of Uniontown, Pennsylvania on US 40 – The Historic National Road.
