Winners of 2014 Washington's Birthday Art Contest Announced

FARMINGTON, PA: The National Park Service honored the winners of the Fort Necessity Washington's Birthday Art Contest with an award ceremony Saturday, February 22.Students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades of local elementary schools were challenged to artistically depict an event in George Washington's life.Entries were received from area public and private schools.Judges chose the winners from student entries based on artistic merit and historical accuracy.

Students received a $50 gift certificate to the Fort Necessity Bookstore for first prize, a $25.00 gift certificate for second prize, or a George Washington Medallion for third prize.Honorable mention entries earned a Fort Necessity patch and certificate.Awards were presented to:

Fourth Grade - Washington in Fayette: First Prize:Gabrielle Goodwin, Conn Area Catholic School, Connellsville; Second Prize:Timothy Huey, George J. Plava Elementary, McClellandtown; Third Prize:Sherman Daniels, Conn Area Catholic School; Honorable Mention:Audra Holonich, Conn Area Catholic School; Faith Casteel, St. John the Evangelist Regional Catholic, Uniontown

Fourth Grade - Life of Washington: First Prize:Taylor Bergman, George J. Plava Elementary; Second Prize:Kaitlin Koresko, St. John the Evangelist Regional Catholic; Third Prize:Evan Reese, Conn Area Catholic School; Honorable Mention:Brianna Rychtorsky, Conn-Area Catholic School; Meaghann Miller, George J. Plava Elementary.

Fifth Grade - Washington in Fayette: First Prize:Dylan Sebek, Conn Area Catholic School; Second Prize:Shameka Fletcher, George J. Plava Elementary; Third Prize:Noah Fike, Chestnut Ridge Christian Academy, Uniontown; Honorable Mention:Tanner Marsh, Chestnut Ridge Christian Academy; Joseph Nace, Conn Area Catholic School

Fifth Grade - Life of Washington: First Prize:Gage Goodwin, Conn Area Catholic School; Second Prize:Haley Dillon, George J. Plava Elementary; Third Prize:Sophie Solomon, Conn Area Catholic School; Honorable Mention:Elizabeth Landman, Conn Area Catholic School; Honorable Mention:Sophia Gaggiani, St. John the Evangelist Regional Catholic.

Fifth Grade - Special Merit – Portrait: Cody Moser, George J. Plava Elementary; Bela Ronzio, Conn-Area Catholic School.

Sixth Grade - Washington in Fayette: First Prize:Josie Pindro, Conn Area Catholic School; Second Prize:Hannah Hampshire, Conn Area Catholic School; Third Prize:AJ Ewing, Conn Area Catholic School; Honorable Mention:Russell Kramer, Chestnut Ridge Christian Academy.

Sixth Grade - Life of Washington: First Prize:Echo Shaffer, Conn Area Catholic School; Second Prize:Josie Bittner, Conn Area Catholic School; Third Prize:Autumn Elliot, A.J. McMullen Middle School, Markleysburg; Honorable Mention:Lauren Tomasko, Conn Area Catholic School; Madison Duke, St. John the Evangelist Regional Catholic

All entries will be on display at the Fort Necessity/National Road Interpretive and Education Center through March 3. Fort Necessity National Battlefield is located 11 miles east of Uniontown on U.S. Route 40, The Historic National Road.
