Fort Necessity National Battlefield

Teachers may elect to bring their classes to Fort Necessity National Battlefield without participating in a Park Service provided educational program.

Resources available

  • Orientation film.  The park has a 20 minute orientation film about the French and Indian War and the National Road.
  • Exhibits. The French and Indian War exhibits and the National Road exhibits in the new visitor center will be open to your group
  • Reconstructed Fort. You may walk to the reconstructed fort.
  • Bookstore. Our bookstore has many books, toys and gifts.

The Mount Washington Tavern is open only for guided programs.

Fees:

$5.00 for adults entrance fee, Children 15 and under free.

If your group is an educational institution recognized by a federal, state or local government and is visiting Fort Necessity National Battlefield on a self guided visit to satisfy curriculum requirements, you may be eligible to receive a waiver of entrance fee into the park.

Planning for a successful self-guided field trip to Fort Necessity

Chaperones

One chaperone per 15 students is required.

Beginning your visit

You should begin your program at the Interpretive and Education Center. Please stop there to check in and turn in your Entrance Fee Waiver Form. The park ranger at the desk can help you plan your visit.

Other groups

You will probably be visiting at the same time as guided field trip groups. There may be guided groups in the bookstore, in the exhibits or at the fort. Please be courteous and wait until they have moved on before entering an area.

Rest rooms

The public rest rooms are located at the Interpretive and Education Center.

Cancellation

If for some reason you need to cancel your field trip please call (724) 329-8124 to let us know.

Conduct

Teachers and chaperones are responsible for the conduct of the group and are expected to stay with the group. Inappropriate conduct may lead to the termination of the field trip.

No food, drink, gum or candy is allowed in the buildings except in designated lunch areas.

Fort Necessity National Battlefield is a National Park. Please do not allow the students to take plants or animals. Do not pick the flowers.

Directions

Fort Necessity National Battlefield is located 11 miles east of Uniontown, PA directly off of U.S. Route 40.

Did You Know?
As a young man in the 1750’s, George Washington made four trips over the Allegheny Mountains . He was shot at by the Indians or French during each of these trips. Despite having four holes shot through his coat and two horse shot out from under him, he escaped being hit by any musket balls.
