Essay Contest Rules

Please examine the rules below closely before contacting the contest coordinator with eligibility questions.

Deadline for entries is April 15, 2008

The scholarship essay contest is designed for sophomores and juniors currently attending a post secondary accredited educational institution who are full time students during the spring 2008 semester. The contest is NOT open to high school students

The eligibility of entrants will be confirmed by the scholarship committee prior to the awarding of scholarships.

Entries will be judged by the essay contest committee judges made up of French and Indian War scholars and subject matter experts. The decision of the judges is final. See contest announcement for judges and essay topics.

Entries must contain a minimum of 2,000 words and a maximum of 3,000 words.

Essays may be submitted via regular mail (postmarked by April 15, 2008) or via e-mail (time stamped before midnight PST April 15, 2008) to the address below.

The essay must be typed and include a works-cited page or bibliography. End notes are suggested but not required.

There is no application form for the contest. The essay and your contact information serve as your application. All entries become the property of the National Park Service and will not be returned.

Applicants must include the complete name and address of their educational institution with their contact information (regular and e-mail address). This information must be included with the essay.

Judging will take place during May, June and July.

The seven winners will be notified in August 2008.

A reception for the winners will be held at Fort Necessity National Battlefield on October 18th.
- Travel costs and lodging for the winners of the contest will be provided by the scholarship contest committee.
- Award checks from the scholarship contest committee will be sent directly to the educational institution of the winners. The scholarship prize money is designed as a reward for academic excellence and must be used for tuition.
- The essay can be sent via e-mail (e-mail: FONE_Superintendent@nps.gov) or regular mail to Fort Necessity National Battlefield, One Washington Parkway, Farmington, PA 15437.
