The unsung heroes of Fort Pulaski were the lever, the pulley, the wheel, the screw and the inclined plane.

    Students will act out newscasts taking place in different parts of the country during the War of 1812. Four groups will portray four unique experiences. Each group will complete a packet of primary and secondary source readings to prepare for the role-play. As student groups present their newscasts and interviews, audience members will record notes.     What was Francis Scott Key writing about?

    This lesson should be taught after the introduction to the attack on Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. Students should have been introduced to some of the history behind the writing of “The Star-Spangled Banner”. The students will use this lesson to dissect the lyrics to “The Star- Spangled Banner” and gain a better understanding of the song. They will also discuss the song’s relevance to the country’s present state of the union and discuss whether the lyrics are still applicable today.

Did You Know?

Fort McHenry was built prior to the War of 1812. The fort is named for James McHenry, Secretary of War, 1796-1800.
