The State of Georgia has designated the month of May as Archaeology Month. On Saturday, May 2, 2009, the staff of Fort Frederica National Monument, along with local fourth-grade students, will present a special program called An Afternoon with Archaeology. The program will be an open house from 2 to 4 pm at the park’s archaeology education program site, located on the grounds of Fort Frederica National Monument.

In addition to the open house, at 2 p.m. the park’s education coordinator will lead a 30-minute guided tour focusing on the archaeology of Fort Frederica. Throughout the afternoon (at the archaeology education program site) local students who have completed the program will showcase what they have learned about archaeology and the history of Frederica. They will demonstrate different processes including excavation, gridding, and screening. Visitors will be able to assist the students with the screening process and try their hands at cross-mending ceramic pieces, identifying artifacts, measuring pipe stems, and sorting artifacts. Superintendent Mary Beth Wester said, “This is the perfect way to show the public the award-winning archaeology education program between Fort Frederica National Monument and the Glynn County School System.”

Fort Frederica National Monument is located at 6515 Frederica Road on Saint Simons Island. Regular admission fees apply for this program: $ 3.00 per adult age 16 and over. Age 15 and under are free. National Park Passes will be accepted. For more information contact the park’s visitor center at (912) 638-3639.
