Fort Frederica National Monument Superintendent Mary Beth Wester is pleased to announce a partnership program between the National Park Service and the St. Simon Island Coasters. This upcoming program will highlight local resident Sophia Porson’s connections to President Eisenhower through President Clinton during her career with the State Department. This first program of a series will occur on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 5:30 pm within the visitor center auditorium at Fort Frederica National Monument.

Sophia Porson is a retired State Department linguist, who served as diplomatic interpreter for eight US presidents. She will talk about her work, accompanied by photos of events at the White House, State Department and abroad.

The program will also help illuminate the National Park Service’s role in preservation and commemoration of the presidents’ stories that are contained in thirty-seven National Park Service sites. The park will have information and hand-outs available about Eisenhower National Historic Site, John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site, Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, Jimmy Carter National Historic Site and President’s Park (the White House).
