Fort Frederica is recruiting dedicated volunteers to assist with the Archaeology Education Program during the fall and spring semesters of the school year. A volunteer training will be offered on July 27 and 28 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

The Archaeology Education Program, conducted in partnership with Glynn County School System, utilizes archaeology to teach core curriculum standards. Every fourth grade student from the ten Glynn County elementary schools and four private schools participate in this innovative program.

According to Superintendent Mary Beth Wester, “This program helps students connect to the past in a real way through hands-on experiences. Students actively discover what the settlers of Frederica left behind.”

Volunteers will bring Frederica’s history to life in a variety of ways. Volunteer opportunities fall into three positions:

• Archaeology Lab Assistant. Assist students at the archaeology lab using science and math to learn about the past from artifacts.
• Archaeology Dig Assistant. Assist students during field excavations and teach proper techniques.
• Historic Frederica Tour Guide. Provide information about the people who lived at Frederica while dressed in 18th century clothing.

School programs begin at 9:00 am and end at 1:00 pm on varying days of the week. Volunteers must be able to work outside in occasional adverse weather conditions. Physical demands include stooping, kneeling and standing for several hours at a time.

Those interested in this rewarding opportunity should contact Volunteer Coordinator Ted Johnson at 912-638-3639.
