Summer Projects
Funding provided by the National Park Service Centennial, 2007-2016, seasonal employee hiring initiative and other project funds received have allowed the park to begin a very ambitious schedule to rehabilitate grounds and facilities, provide additional educational partnerships and ensure to the greatest extent possible a safe experience for staff and park visitors.

Parks As Classrooms film wins another award
Multimedia Producer David van Hooser, with the Tennessee Renaissance Center, presented a certificate of appreciation to Superintendent Steven McCoy for the park’s collaboration for the production, “Fort Donelson: A Place for Heroes.” The children’s film won an Emmy for the Children’s Programming Category at the 22nd annual Mid-South Regional Awards in Nashville, Tennessee.

Eaglefest
Dover, Tennessee—The National Park Service assisted with a local community festival known as Eaglefest during the Memorial Day Weekend. This three-day event brought approximately 3,500 visitors from the surrounding Kentucky-Tennessee region into the Dover community and the national park.

Fort Donelson National Battlefield Announces New Summer Programs
Dover, TN—Superintendent Steven McCoy announced today a series of new summer programs at Fort Donelson National Battlefield.  This year, visitors may enjoy programs at the historic Dover Hotel, the Common Soldier Living History Program, and a Ranger-led Auto Caravan Tour, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

Musket School
Dover, Tennessee—The Fort Donelson National Battlefield Ranger staff is recruiting volunteers to participate in the 2008 Summer Historic Musket Firing Demonstrations. The Musket Firing programs are very popular at Civil War battlefield sites across the country. Fort Donelson NB needs volunteer participants to create a new, expanded program.

New Park Signage planned for Fort Donelson NB
Dover, Tennessee—Park visitors will see new additions to Fort Donelson National Battlefield in the next several weeks. New signage will be placed at both Forts Donelson and Heiman, along with new gates to provide additional park security.

Memorial Day Events at Fort Donelson NB
Dover, Tennessee—Special services to honor veterans at Fort Donelson National Battlefield will be held May 25 & 26, 2008. The national cemetery will be the site of two memorial services, hosted by the National Park Service, veteran’s organizations, and local civic and scout groups.

Junior Ranger Weekend set for 2008
Junior Ranger Weekend set for 2008 Dover, Tennessee—Children and families can enjoy a special weekend filled with activities at Fort Donelson National Battlefield on June 7 and 8, 2008. Family hikes, Civil War music, and art programs will be offered for Junior Ranger Weekend, Saturday, and Sunday, June 7 & 8, from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm each day.

Dover, Tennessee—Children can get a special opportunity to become Junior Rangers at Fort Donelson National Battlefield. Two programs will be held for Junior Ranger Day on April 26 at 10 am and 2 pm. Scout groups and families are encouraged to attend.

Dover, Tennessee—Kids always have heroes, but you’d never think that they’d chose a Civil War soldier or nurse, or even a runaway slave as a hero, now would you? Well, you might if you were an elementary or middle school student who’s seen FortDonelson: A Place for Heroes, a new film created by the TennesseeRenaissanceCenter, Dickson, Tennessee, and the Park Ranger staff at Fort Donelson National Battlefield.

Fort DonelsonNB, TN – On Monday, October 30, 2006, the Calloway County Executive Office will officially announce the transfer of properties associated with FortHeiman in Calloway County, Kentucky, to the National Park Service. A news conference hosted by the County Executive Office is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Did You Know?
Family tradition holds that Andrew Johnson arrived in Greeneville with a cart drawn by a blind pony in 1826. His mother and step-father were with him. Tradition also says they camped at a spring on the Homestead property.
