On May 25, the park will hold an Illumination Ceremony at the national cemetery. The event begins at 8:30 pm and concludes at 9:30 pm. A luminary will be placed at each veteran’s headstone, and staff and volunteers will be present to provide information about the cemetery and Civil War veterans. The ceremony will be one element of a three-day community event called Eagle Fest: A Salute to Freedom. The Illumination Ceremony is coordinated with help from scout groups, NPS staff, and the Friends of the Fort Donelson Campaign.

On Monday, May 26, the annual Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at the cemetery from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm.  This year’s ceremony is co-hosted by the Women Veterans of America, Chapter #20 and the Women Veterans Network of the VA Tennessee Valley.  The guest speaker will be First Sergeant (Retired) Carleen D. Robertson, U.S. Air Force, of Paris, Tennessee.  She served in the active duty Air Force from February 1950 to July 1975.

Programs times may be adjusted in case of inclement weather. Contact the park staff at 931-232-5706 x 101 for more information.

Salmon River rushes by banks with thick shrubs and trees. One old tree is falling in the river as the water erodes the bank.

Did You Know?
The Salmon River in Kobuk Valley National Park was designated a wild and scenic river in 1980. Boaters can access this remote, beautiful river only by packing their boats from high mountain airstrips to the headwaters
