Dover, Tennessee—A variety of events for all ages will be offered during the month of August at Fort Donelson National Battlefield.All events are free and open to the public.

On Saturday, August 6, a special Junior Ranger activity will be offered at the Dover Hotel (tour route stop #10), along Petty Street, in Dover. The program is scheduled for 2PM.

On Thursday August 11, the park’s Civil War film series continues at the visitor center with a showing of the silent Buster Keaton comedy classic “The General.” We’ll discuss how the Civil War became part of American popular culture. The film will start at 6:00 PM.

On Saturday, August 27, the Civil War Singers will offer a special concert at the lower picnic area at 6PM. (Program will be held at the visitor center in case of inclement weather.)

On Thursday, August 25, at 6 PM,  the Fort Donelson Civil War 150th Book Club will continue with a discussion of James McPherson’s Why They Fought, 1861-1865. Some free copies of the book are available for participants. Call (931)232-5706, ext. 108.

There was a significant enslaved population in Stewart County, TN, before and during the 1862 battle. After the Union victories at Forts Heiman, Henry and Donelson, many freedom seeking slaves sought refuge at these forts, even establishing a community near today's Fort Donelson National Cemetery.
