Fort Donelson National Battlefield is beginning the planning process of a new General Management Plan. The plan identifies the overall direction for the future management of the Battlefield. This includes answering the question "what kind of place do we want this area to be?"

We areĀ are looking for your help in answering this question. You are invited to participate in the planning and preservation of the Battlefield through the submission of comments and attendance at upcoming public meetings.

There was a significant enslaved population in Stewart County, TN, before and during the 1862 battle. After the Union victories at Forts Heiman, Henry and Donelson, many freedom seeking slaves sought refuge at these forts, even establishing a community near today's Fort Donelson National Cemetery.
