Re-Use of Closed Military
Bases (BRAC)
Much of a military base designated for closing
under a Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC) becomes available to communities
for other public and private uses.
The Federal Lands to Parks Program is
a successful partnership with state
and local government agencies and the military to help convert former military bases to public park and recreation use. The Program assists in planning
and negotiating re-use appropriate for park lands, recreational
areas and green-space and, upon approval by the military,
transfers this land to the community through a "Public
Benefit Conveyance" for parks and recreation. Communities requested Federal Lands to Parks Program assistance on eighty-eight per cent (86 of 97) of military bases closed under the previous four rounds of base closures.
The National Park Service has helped
78 communities in 23 states and Guam to gain former military
base properties closed under BRAC laws, resulting in 11,163
acres of land, to date, for new public parks and recreational
areas. An additional 14 community requests, including 3,935
acres, have been recommended by the Program and are awaiting military
final approval for transfer. Please contact
Federal Lands to Parks regional program coordinators for additional
information about other base closure properties that are in
process or of interest.
