Superintendent Joanne Hanley Announces Retirement
Somerset, Pa--Joanne M. Hanley announced her retirement today after 32 years with the National Park Service, 13 of them in western Pennsylvania. She currently serves as general superintendent, National Parks of Western Pennsylvania, which includes the Flight 93 National Memorial.
Hanley is the first superintendent of the national memorial and has been with the project from its inception. “The crash of Flight 93 into the middle of our lives in western PA had a dramatic effect on all of us, and had a profound impact on me personally,” Hanley said. “I have been honored, humbled, challenged, and blessed beyond my imagination in being allowed to be the caretaker, steward and NPS leader of this project for the last nine years. I leave this project almost at the completion of the first phase and at the launch into the next phase, in the competent, committed and capable hands of my staff and our partners, who helped get us this far in the first place.” The rest of the management team at the Flight 93 National Memorial and the other parks in western Pennsylvania will remain in place.
Hanley begins a new career as President of the Gettysburg Foundation on February 1, 2011.
About the Flight 93 National Memorial
On Sept. 24, 2002, Congress passed the Flight 93 National Memorial Act. The Act created a new national park unit to commemorate the passengers and crew of Flight 93 who, on September 11, 2001, courageously gave their lives thereby thwarting a planned attack on our nation’s capital. The memorial is near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where Flight 93 crashed with the loss of its 40 passengers and crew.
