National Parks of Western Pennsylvania

Philadelphia—National Park Service Northeast Regional Director Dennis R. Reidenbach has named Keith Newlin superintendent of the National Parks of Western Pennsylvania, which includes the Flight 93 National Memorial, Johnstown Flood National Memorial, Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, Fort Necessity National Battlefield and Friendship Hill National Historic Site. Newlin will assume his duties February 1, 2011, and serve in the position for one year. He replaces Joanne Hanley, who will retire at the end of January.

"Keith Newlin has experience in many aspects of park operations," said Reidenbach, "including service as deputy superintendent at the National Parks of Western Pennsylvania. He is the right individual to provide consistent leadership as we prepare to open the Flight 93 National Memorial in September 2011."

Gordon Felt, President of the Families of Flight 93, added "We are delighted that the National Park Service has officially named Keith Newlin superintendent of the National Parks of Western PA, which includes the Flight 93 National Memorial. Keith has proven himself to be an invaluable partner in the effort to create an enduring national memorial to the 40 heroes who lost their lives in Shanksville on September 11th. His depth of experience and leadership ability are greatly admired by us all. We look forward to working with him and the National Park Service team, particularly in this pivotal 10th anniversary year."

"Keith Newlin's appointment as Superintendent of National Parks of Western Pennsylvania is a reassuring sign to project supporters at every level that there will be no gap in leadership at the Flight 93 National Memorial," said Neil Mulholland, President and CEO of the National Park Foundation. "We welcome this news and look forward to working with Superintendent Newlin in the months ahead on this important national project."

"The Flight 93 National Memorial Federal Advisory Commission is pleased with this announcement," said Commission Chair John Reynolds.. "Keith will remain a knowledgeable, focused and trusted leader at this critical stage in Flight 93's history."

"The five parks in Western Pennsylvania have many exceptional partners and employees. I look forward to sustaining our productive efforts in all of the parks," Newlin stated.

Newlin has served as deputy superintendent for the Western Pennsylvania Parks since 2007. Previously, he served as superintendent and earlier as chief of maintenance, for Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site and Johnstown Flood National Memorial. He also served as deputy chief of maintenance for the National Capital Parks in Washington DC. He was also a project coordinator for preservation projects at the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials.
