Date: November 1, 2009

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009, the United States will observe Veterans Day, a day celebrating our veterans of the military.  The National Park Service will recognize the contributions of our veterans by making this a “free fee” day for veterans and their families at all National Parks, including Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.  All U.S. military veterans and current members of the U.S. armed forces and their families will be admitted free-of-charge on Veterans Day to public lands managed by both the Department of the Interior and the Department of Agriculture. This will be an excellent opportunity to visit Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, or, if you have visited before it will be an excellent day to re-visit.  The Monument will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with Ranger programs scheduled during the day, a video explaining the fossils shown throughout the day, and a free Junior Ranger program for children to earn a Junior Ranger badge.  Additionally there are 14 miles of hiking trails open to you, including two self guided loops to help you experience this beautiful mountain park.  Picnic areas are also available.

To reach the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, travel 35 miles west of Colorado Springs on Highway 24.  At the town of Florissant, turn left onto Teller County #1, and travel 2 miles south to the Visitor Center.  For additional information call 719-748-3253.
