The National Park Service (NPS), through Fort Davis National Historic Site, provided $4,000 in rural fire assistance (RFA) funding to the Fort Davis Volunteer Fire Department in August, 2009. The funding will provide wildland fire equipment and personal protective gear to local volunteer firefighters including Nomex shirts and pants, wildland fire helmets and emergency communication equipment.
The National Park Service has provided RFA funding to local volunteer fire departments to improve their wildland firefighting capability each year since 2001. Several NPS employees volunteer with the fire department, which provides firefighting and other emergency services. This ongoing partnership helps foster collaboration at the local level and improves firefighter safety.
“Our department is always looking for ways to improve our response capabilities and the funding from the National Park Service’s Rural Fire Assistance and our relationship with the staff at the historic site helps us to provide quality aid to our community.” stated Chief Kelly Bryan, Fort Davis Volunteer Fire Department.
