Amistad National Recreation Area
NPS Provides RFA Grant to Local Fire Department
National Fire Plan – Community Assistance*

Amistad National Recreation Area (NRA) provided $2,000 in rural fire assistance (RFA) funding to the Val Verde County Rural Volunteer Fire Department (VVCRVFD) in 2009. The funding will help provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to local firefighters, including Nomex shirts and pants, and wildland fire helmets.

The park has provided RFA funding to VVCRVFD to improve their wildland firefighting capability for several years. VVCRVFD is the first response to fires within Amistad NRA and has provided a valuable service that has saved park resources and visitor property.
“The responsiveness of the Val Verde County Fire Department has been outstanding. They are very sensitive to the needs of fighting fire within the park aggressively, but safely while keeping an eye towards resource protection. We couldn’t ask for a better partner and are proud to be able to contribute to their safety in fighting fires in the park and in our Val Verde County Community.” stated Amistad NRA Chief Ranger Regina Klein Dissler.
