Unlike larger parks that have many firefighting staff, the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park fire program is much smaller and must rely on nearby fire departments for backup. The park has been supporting local volunteer fire departments through the rural fire assistance (RFA) program since the inception of the National Fire Plan in 2000.
This year, Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park awarded $9,000 in RFA funding to the local Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department. The funding will help provide essential equipment and radios to volunteer firefighters which will help improve their safety and effectiveness when responding to fires in and around the park, thus benefiting the park and the local community.
