Capulin Volcano National Monument
Capulin Fire Department Receives Federal Funding
National Fire Plan – Community Assistance *

Capulin Volunteer Fire Department has received $11,000 in federal funding from the Department of the Interior under the Rural Fire Assistance (RFA) Program to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to its members. The purpose is to improve firefighter safety and enhance wildland fire protection capabilities of rural and volunteer fire departments when responding to wildland fires. The RFA program targets rural/volunteer fire departments to assist fighting fire on or near Department of the Interior lands. As part of the agreement, Capulin Fire Department will provide a matching cost share of 10% (which may include in-kind services).

With its 10 members, Capulin Volunteer Fire Department provides emergency wildland and structural fire response to Capulin Volcano National Monument. Currently, there are no employees on staff at the monument qualified as firefighters. This service provides support and personnel in case a fire does occur at or near the monument.

Capulin Fire Chief Garland King worked with employees of the monument to identify equipment needs for the department. The following is a partial list of equipment received under the program: Nomex brush pants and shirts, fire shelters, 2 way radios, goggles, headlamps, drip torches, and backpack pumps.
