Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park Boundary Fuel Break Completed
In 2005, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park completed a four-year project to create a 60-foot wide fuel break along the park boundary. The fuel break is designed to reduce hazard fuel loads to help minimize wildland fire threats to the park and adjacent properties. This project demonstrates illustrates the park’s commitment to working tirelessly with developers to maintain a buffer between developments and the National Park.
During May 2005, a contract hand crew cleared 30 acres to complete the final section of the fuel break. Cleared vegetation consisted primarily of white pines, small shrubs and small trees (6 inches or smaller in diameter). A number of the pine trees in the affected area were dead trees killed due to Southern pine beetle infestation. Crews took special precautions to avoid damaging earthworks, as the majority of the work was conducted in the area of the Union line, 16th Army Corp.
Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield is a 2,888 acre National Battlefield that preserves a Civil War battleground of the Atlanta Campaign. The park is located in the Marietta metropolitan area, in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia.
