Superintendent Reed E. Detring is pleased to be hosting a newly acquired regional resource at Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Big South Fork was selected as a host park for the Type 6 engine as it was centrally located within the region, had support staff available, and a heated engine bay. The Type 6 engine is being housed in the park’s new 4,200 square foot fire cache.

The primary use of the fuels-funded engine will be to accompany the Cumberland Gap and Great Smoky Mountains Fire Use Modules throughout the Southeast Region as they conduct fuels projects. Detailers will be brought in to help Big South Fork personnel staff the engine. The engine may also be used for initial attack fire at Big South Fork or other local units as needed.

The engine was manufactured by Boise Mobile Equipment. It will be outfitted and equipped by the park with support from the Southeast Regional Office and should be operational by January 2007.

The National Park Service Southeast Region Fuels Specialist coordinated an arrangement to have the engine transferred to the National Park Service Southeast Region from the Midwest Region. The engine was shipped to Big South Fork in early November 2006.
