Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area Park Completes Construction of New Fire Cache
Superintendent Reed E. Detring is pleased to announce the completion of the new Tennessee Fire Cache located in the headquarters complex of Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.
The cache was contracted in FY-02 using National Fire Plan Facilities money. The working design was drafted by park staff and blueprint plans were drawn by the National Park Service Southeast Regional Office. The cache was then constructed by C & F Construction, utilizing local sub-contractors where possible. The cache was completed in November 2006.
The cache consists of three bays large enough for a Type 6 engine and support vehicles. There is a large storage room for suppression equipment and supplies at the rear of the engine bays. The office side of the building has two offices, kitchen, bathrooms for men and women and a large conference/training room. The conference room is approximately 850 square feet providing plenty of room for meetings and training.
In addition, the building was planned to house any incident response team that may respond to Big South Fork. The building has a backup generator capable of running the entire building in case of a power outage and the conference room was wired to support 25 phones and 25 computers in the event of a large incident. The fully functional kitchen can also be used by fire personnel to provide food support to the team or personnel working out of the cache.
