Catoctin
Mountain Park Hazard Fuels Reduction Project Completed
Like many parks, Catoctin Mountain Park
faces wildland-urban intermix issues that must be addressed.
In 2004, 169 acres were treated in a mechanical hazardous
fuel reduction project. A locally owned small business, Mays
Tree Service, accomplished the work, helping to protect the
Park and surrounding communities from the effects of possible
fires.
Catoctin Mountain Park is not an especially
well known NPS area. The park lies within the mountainous
area known as the Blue Ridge Province. This 5,810-acre hardwood
forest park with its refreshing streams and scenic vistas,
offers a rare haven in a rapidly developing area of the country.
Many people have heard of one place in the park, Camp David.
The Presidential retreat is not open to or accessible to the
public, but the rest of the 5,770 acres of eastern hardwood
forest is available to hikers, picnickers, campers and other
folks seeking the restorative powers of recreating in the
Appalachian Mountains.
