Yellowstone National Park
Crosscut Saw Safety and Use Training Program
Completed at Yellowstone

In keeping with wilderness management and fuels contracting mandates, the Yellowstone Fire Management operation completed a crosscut saw safety and use program in early May 2003. This 16 hour course included 10 participants. It was presented by contractor Arden Corey of Mill City, Oregon and was coordinated as a partnership with the Yellowstone Trails Maintenance operation. The costs were split between the two programs.

Techniques presented included proper personal protective equipment, saw design, sharpening, tree size-up and felling, various bucking techniques and associated equipment use. The skills gained will allow staff to complete fuels reduction projects at a variety of wilderness sites. All 10 participants were certified as crosscut sawyers at the same level as their chainsaw qualifications.
