The National Park Service and Washita Battlefield National Historic Site are pleased to announce this years United States Department of the Interior Rural Fire Assistance Program funding recipients. This is the second year of this program designed to help rural fire departments that support National Park Service units in fire suppression. The winners this year are Cheyenne, Reydon and Strong City.
One of the criteria of the program is that the receiving department must provide 10% matching funds. Each department will receive $7,000 to go towards the purchase of new equipment. The Cheyenne Volunteer Fire Department will complete the replacement of its structural firefighting coats and pants that was started last year, Reydon VFD will purchase structural firefighting clothing, and Strong City VFD will purchase airpacks for their structural firefighting efforts.
Washita Battlefield NHS is committed to supporting the area communities that provide much needed fire suppression in the county. The park competed with over 300 other units of the National Park Service to obtain Rural Fire Assistance funding. They plan to continue to apply for the grants in the future in order to support their rural fire departments.
