The annual three-day Wyoming Hunting and Fishing Exposition was held earlier this month in Casper, WY, an event that attracts between 12,000-16,000 people each year. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department hosted a number of exhibits, including a station explaining the importance of prescribed fire in wildlife habitat management. A variety of display items were available to explain the role of fire and how wildlife responds to various successional stages. Grand Teton National Park and the Bridger-Teton National Forest provided Teton Interagency fire personnel for the prescribed fire station.
The first day of the exposition is a popular field trip destination for teachers and students from across the state. Approximately 150 schools pre-registered this year, entitling teachers to a natural resource curriculum guide that included pre- and postactivities to extend the event's educational opportunities. Many other schools registered on site. Over 9,000 students attended the first day of the exposition. Each teacher visiting the prescribed fire station received a Fire Ecology Resource Management Education Unit filled with background information and lesson plans for activities on fire.
