Arkansas National Park Service Units
Rural Fire Assistance in Arkansas

In the year 2002, the Arkansas Park Units had fourteen departments participating in the Rural Fire Assistance Program in Arkansas. This was an increase of three departments since 2001.

The 2002 allocation for Arkansas Park Units was nearly doubled and five departments, most local to Buffalo National River, participated in Basic Wildland Firefighting, Wildland Fire Behavior and Fire Operations in the Urban Interface trainings for the second year in a row.

Over fifty volunteer rural firefighters from five different fire departments completed these classes this past October. A retired forest service district ranger from Hot Springs, Arkansas, John Archer, led the cadre responsible for the training.

Though there are not any recorded dispatches or assistance from departments this year, it is fair to say relations and communications have improved vastly and our partners will be there to assist when we get into a cycle of wildfire in Arkansas.

There are five park units across the state of Arkansas: Buffalo National River, Pea Ridge National Military Park, Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas Post National Memorial and Ft. Smith National Historic Site.
