The National Park Service (NPS) Fire Ecology Program is guided by National Park Service policy. In addition to this policy foundation, in 2004, a Strategic Plan was completed to provide more specific long-term direction that will help achieve the program's mission. The Fire Ecology Steering Committee, made up of members from all levels of the Fire Ecology Program, as well as other members of the NPS Fire and Resource Management Programs and USGS scientists, functions as a working group to help develop and revise policy and program focus as needed to support park programs. Interagency policy also directs us to collaborate with many other partners to implement NPS and interagency programs as efficiently as possible. |
 |
Strategic Plan
The Strategic Plan organizes
the work of the Fire Ecology Program in a comprehensive,
logical manner to define the scope of the program, establish
goals and objectives to drive the program, outline strategies
for achieving the objectives, and develop action plans
for accomplishing the strategies.
 |
 |
Steering Committee
The Fire Ecology Steering Committee (FESC) was established to support field level resource and fire management programs.

Partnerships
The establishment, maintenance, and promotion of partnerships both within and outside the agency are critical to ensuring long-term NPS fire management program success.

Directors Order #18: Wildland Fire Management
DO#18 defines the basic principles and strategic guidelines governing the management of wildland fire by the National Park Service (NPS). It is a renewal of the previously issued Wildland Fire Management Director’s Order, which had a sunset date of December 31, 2006. It has been updated to implement the Federal Wildland Fire Management Policy. The provisions of this Director’s Order and Reference Manual 18 provide further direction for Section 4.5 of Management Policies 2006 and supersede all previous NPS instructions, requirements, and statements of policy relating to wildland fire management that may be in conflict.

National Fire Plan
The National Fire Plan
is a long-term investment that will help protect communities
and natural resources, and most importantly, the lives
of firefighters and the public. It is a long-term commitment
based on cooperation and communication among federal
agencies, states, local governments, tribes and interested
publics.

Federal Wildland Fire Policy
This report addresses
five major topic areas, presents nine guiding principles
that are fundamental to wildland fire management and
recommends a set of thirteen Federal wildland fire policies.
While unique agency missions may result in minor operational
differences, having, for the first time, one set of
"umbrella" Federal fire policies will enhance
effective and efficient operations across administrative
boundaries and improve our capability to meet the challenges
posed by current wildland fire conditions.
