Background Information.

At any point in your career you may benefit from college sponsored courses. There are many options today for the working professional to fit education into their schedule. Distance Learning and condensed residency programs provide opportunities to learn critical knowledge and skills that will help you perform in your current position as well as aid in advancement to your next.

Technical Fire Management (TFM) is one of several programs listed below under Related Links. It is administered by the Washington Institute, a privately owned company specializing in developing educational opportunities for natural resource managers. An advisory committee of agency representatives provides guidance for curriculum content and candidate selection.  The University of Idaho provides curriculum oversight. The program is not intended for people with a four-year resource, biological science or fire degree or a significant number of credits in these fields. A very significant time commitment is required both on and off duty to complete the program. In addition, participants must have:

  • Completed S-390, Introduction to Fire Behavior
  • A working knowledge of BEHAVE Plus, Windows, Internet Explorer, Fire Family +, Word, Excel (with data analysis tool pack) and Powerpoint

Applications are sent to the Fire Management Program Center (FMPC), scored and disseminated to appropriate Regional FMOs for final selection.

If you have any questions contact Mark Koontz at Mark_Koontz@nps.gov or at (208) 387-5090.
